Match sheet Vikings vs. Levin Lions

Played in Levin, 2:45 kick off.

Ground Condition
The pitch was in great condition.

Weather
Heavy showers intermittingly with a light breeze.
Score:
1 – 6(Half Time 0 – 3)

Who Played Well:
Joseph Wyatt was our man of the match; the score line doesn’t reflect his courageous performance between the sticks. Numerous times he saved what looked to be certain goals with lightening reflexes and acrobatic dives. Ajay Nand and Tim McDonald had strong games in the midfield.
Game Review:
The Levin Lions proved there premiership credentials with a strong performance against the surprise package of the season, the Dannevirke Vikings. Levin proved too quick up front, leaving the defenders in their wake on numerous occasions. We felt the score line should have been a little bit closer, however without sounding defeatist, it was a fair result given the fitness and skill of the opposition.
The game didn’t start according to plan when the Lions strikers caught the Vikings defensive line napping as they tried unsuccessfully to play the offside trap. The strikers were clear on goal with only the keeper to beat, they showed their class and finished what they had started. The defenders then declared that the offside trap was off the menu, but this didn’t starve the opposition, as they feasted on goal scoring opportunities. Letting the puns flow, I can say the Vikings were positively bulimic at the other end, squandering what little opportunity they received.
The Vikings boxed on and went into the break three nil down. We knew the second half would be an uphill struggle but going by our performances in the previous weeks we knew if we played our best we could definitely pull a couple of goals back.
The second half began very well with some strong attempts on goal. After a few blanks were fired, John Wyatt drove home powerfully to beat the keeper. His second goal of the season, that’s two more than Nigel Jackson. At 3 -1 that goal gave us the belief that a draw was not out of the question. This isn’t Hollywood though and there was no happy ending, the Lions struck back scoring two goals in quick succession. The Vikings weren’t done yet though, as some beautiful passing saw Dave Rowe through on goal. He added to his monstrous tally this season by burring it into the corner. However the referee wanted his two cents worth and ruled no goal, a farcical decision, it was offside apparently.
For not the first time this season with the game out of reach, the Vikings started playing some superb football in the last twenty minutes. It was too little too late though and the score remained 1 – 6.
It is the Vikings second to last game of the season next week so I urge young and old to come along and support us at the showgrounds, 2:45 pm kick off.

Match sheet: Massey Storm v Vikings

Played at Massey Oval 2:45pm

Ground Condition: The pitch was in good condition

Weather: Bright spells with the odd shower.

Score: 1 – 4(Half Time 1 - 4)

Goal Scorers (In order), David Rowe, Massey, David Rowe, David Rowe, David Rowe

Who Played Well: Dave Luke the Vikings coach tactically got it right making key changes to the team and introducing a new look back line which really impressed. David Rowe was the hero back from a six week lay off and just had the golden touch banging them in with his head left and right foot. He now has 14 goals for the season. This was the Vikings best performance of the year and the whole squad of 14 really did deserve a mention.

Game Review:
Dangerous Dannevirke crush the mighty Storm as the Vikings defence holds up like the Great Wall of China (well it is the Olympics).
This was going to be a hard game for the Vikings. Yet this was going to a day of free flowing football and well worked set pieces.
The first 20 minutes were hotly contested yet Massey Storm couldn’t penetrate the solid looking defence. After a Massey attacking play, cool heads in defence passed the ball round like the World Cup winners Italy, Ajay Nand played a superb lofted ball into the middle of the park and Rodney Leveridge showed great vision in giving a flicked header on to David Rowe. With one touch banged the ball into the bottom right hand corner. It looked like it was going to be another typical Vikings performance when 5 minutes later Jordan Dempster had a rush of blood to the head and took out the young Massey striker for a penalty to be awarded. This was the only way the Massey side were going to Score. The Vikings showed great composer when AJ put a great pass to Rodney Leveridge who passed through for David Rowe to be left one on one with the Keeper and to excellently finish with his unfavoured left foot. The party was not over yet for the Vikings or David Rowe when from a corner; he came running in to the near post for a glancing header and buried it in the net. The next 10 minutes was all about the Vikings with total domination hitting the post and going close several times. With time up in the clock David Rowe was left in space to score his fourth before the half was over.

After an excellent team talk at halftime from Christopher Mumford the Vikings looked like a proper football team and closed out there opponents in the second half. The Vikings were unlucky not to score several more, with Rodney Leveridge, Geoff Buchannan, (in his last game this season) Greg and John Wyatt all going close. In the last 10 minutes the Storm threw everything at the Vikings yet great goalkeeping from Joseph Wyatt as well as strong defence from the back line of Luke Gray Stuart, Eli Gray Stuart, Colin Bertham and the token Pom Christopher Mumford all put bodies and souls on the line to deny them.

Finally the Vikings have shown that they can play football and already with one eye on next season with the tactical knowledge of Dave Luke as coach really can’t wait to be title challengers

Match sheet Vikings vs. Valeron

Played at Dannevirke Show grounds, 2:45 kick off.
Ground Condition
The pitch was in good condition considering the rain of late.
Weather
Light breeze and overcast.
Score
2-2 (Half Time 2-1)
Point scorers Rodney Leveridge, Ratanak Mao

Who Played Well
The whole team stood up, we created many chances but just convert the crucial final pass. Mark Holdaway and Mark Irwin had good games in the midfield; they had big shoes to fill with the absence of injured playmaker Tim McDonald. Luke Gray-Stuart was strong at the back snuffing out anything that came his way.
Game Review
The Vikings started well and were keen to avenge the 6-4 defeat suffered at the feet of Valeron last round. They looked the likely victors until a late Valeron equaliser spoiled the party.
Young Jordan Gowan in only his second start in the yellow jersey did him self proud and set up the Vikings opener. He did what many senior players have struggled to do all season. He played a lovely long ball to the feet of Rod Leveridge. He was left with a little work to do but was all class in putting the ball in the net. The Vikings dominated play and always looked dangerous but it was Valeron who scored next to blow the game wide open. A powerful shot from outside the 18 yard box proved too much for the keeper, who could only parry it into his net. Rattanak Mao in conjunction with Max Khammy were dangerous up front and gave the Valeron backs the run around. Rattanak scored next when he spotted the keeper out of position and off his line, he coolly slipped it past him in uncharacteristic fashion for a superb goal. The score remained 2-1 until half time.
The second half looked as though it was going to more of the same. The Vikings looked completely dominant and dangerous. Some slick passing created all sort of problems for Valeron, but the ball just wasn’t going in. It was Valeron who received a lucky break when a tired Vikings defence failed to clear the ball; this resulted in a superb shot from tricky angle to make it two all.
Valeron managed to keep the Vikings scoreless in the second half, although it was more good luck than good management. Several times the Vikings were denied by the wood work and also by some athletic saves from the keeper. Mark Holdaway was desperately unlucky, he did well to get his boot a Colin Bertham cross only to see it crash into the post and go wide. A few unnamed players could not possibly be considered unlucky with there efforts, thunderous shots going metres wide of the posts when it was probably easier to score.
